About This Car
The seller’s father purchased this 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL new while serving in Germany as a member of the Canadian armed forces. It is finished in white over black leather and powered by a 2.3-liter inline-six. Equipment includes a four-speed manual transmission, a black soft top, a white Pagoda top, and a Blaupunkt radio. This W113 SL is now offered in North York, Ontario with the owner’s manual, service records, a car cover, and Ontario registration.
The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. This example was repainted in the factory white around 1983 at which time the hood was also repaired. The car is equipped with a matching Pagoda top and a black soft top. The windshield washer wiring was repaired in 2013. A hole in the soft top has been patched, and close-up photos of the paintwork and trim are provided in the gallery.
The 14″ steel wheels are mounted with 195/70 Toyo tires manufactured in 2023. Braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. Service in 2013 included replacing and adjusting the left front king pin, and replacing front brake calipers, front and rear brake hoses, and right rear wheel bearing.
The seats are upholstered in black leather and the carpets are gray. The wood trim needs to be refinished, the dashboard lights do not work, and the seller notes that the passenger door requires a light touch to close. The gas pedal was replaced in 2013.
Instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 80 miles and has rolled over. The speedometer cable was replaced in 2013.
The mechanically fuel-injected 2.3-liter M127 inline-six was installed under warranty in 1968. Service in August 2010 included replacing the filters, re-coring the radiator, and replacing the subframe mounts, engine mounts, fuel lines, exhaust seals, and battery tray. The alternator belt was replaced in 2013.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The car was undercoated when it was brought to Canada. The front exhaust pipe and front muffler were replaced in 2013. The seller notes weeping from the rear differential.
